We try to understand how basic psychological principles apply to everyday workplace topics, like training, leadership, selection, promotion, organizational development, and performance. If it's happening at work, we're probably studying it.
The motto for the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) is "Science for a Smarter Workplace," which reflects our drive to promote fairness, wellbeing, and productivity in organizations.
I/O psychologists can work in a variety of different areas, such as consulting, talent management, people analytics, human resources, assessment, and many more.
However, in addition to industry, I/O psychologists can work in academia, applied research, or a mix of all of these. The wide range of positions that we can hold highlights a strong potential for I/O psychologists to bridge divides between science and practice.
As scientist-practitioners, we continuously aim to make our work relevant to organizations, as well as help organizations implement evidence-based practices.
